Tips on Lingerie Care

Need a few tips on how best to care for your fine lingerie? Here’s a few to get you started.

Material

First tip, It’s important to know that lingerie is usually made of high quality and perhaps delicate material. Its almost certain to contain items such as elastic, metal, bone as well as a lot of other elements.

Washing

Irrelevant of the cost, the quality of the material will diminish if you wash your products in the washing machine. Who’s going to hand wash anything these days? Not too many I’m sure, but be warned the washing machine is a no-no for lingerie. As we are sure many will use the washing machine we are listing some information here to help.

Washing Machine

If using the washing machine, firstly read the label, insert the item inside out into a wash bag. If you don’t have a wash bag a fine pillowcase is good too. What the bag does is stop the straps etc. getting wound up and damaged around your other clothes in the washing machine.  Use the correct laundry detergent for delicate items and the correct amount and make sure the water temperature is under 30degrees .  A lot of lingerie contains wires or bone fittings to make the item sit right and hug your body. If you spin these you will certainly do damage. If using the washing machine use either the hand wash or the delicate cycle. Fabric conditioner is not necessary and is bad for elastic. Never mix colours with whites as it will cause the white items to discolour.

Hand Wash

If the item is really delicate or of very high quality only hand wash, that’d be my best advice. Never mix colour’s or dark pieces.  Do not use hot water.  Best to dissolve the washing powder or use a small amount of liquid detergent in hot water. Then add cold water to bring the water temperature down to warm for hand washing. Wash gently and rinse well under the running tap to remove all detergent. Allow excess water to drain off, do not hand wring.

Drying

If possible dry your lingerie naturally in the fresh air. Never ever in a tumble dryer, nor on the radiator, as this will also damage the elastic and material. You might get away a few times but a tumble dryer will destroy elastic etc. over time. Dry flat or use a clothes hanger, do not subject your lingerie to pegs if possible. If your lucky enough to be in a very hot climate, dry items out of strong sun as this will fade the colour very quickly.

Storage

Of course storage is important too, if you can, try to keep your bras inverted in each other as this can support them and helps avoid damage to wires etc.  Fold babydolls etc. neatly and if possible,  place in a clear bag, which is a great form of protection for stockings also. If you use a hand wash method and care properly for your items you will have them for years.
